Here’s a quick look at UM4GI events this week for April 7th – April 14th, as well as this weekend’s preaching schedule!

This Week’s Events/Announcements

  • First- Faith Lunch Bunch! Come share in a noon potluck meal with games to follow on Wednesday, April 8th at First-Faith UMC.
  • Kids Night Out! Kids Night Out will be on Friday, April 10th from 7:00 – 8:30 pm at First-Faith UMC. It is a wonderful opportunity for children to worship, have snacks, bible lessons, and participate in fun and games! Bring the kids and let them experience their own “Night Out”!   • The 2015 UM4GI grant application is available for Post High School students! Criteria considered as the grants are awarded include: Membership at Trinity or First-Faith (required), academic promise and financial need. You may download the application here and send it in electronically to, or deliver to your church office by April 10th, 2015.
  • Applications are being accepted for the Summer Ministry Internship. This internship is a great opportunity for an individual interested in ministry to participate in a variety of ministerial experiences and relations. The application deadline HAS BEEN EXTENDED to May 1st and can be found here.
  • Scott Taylor and friends are back! Scott has outdone himself in arranging a great slate of musicians for our Annual HIV AIDS Benefit Concert. If you have never before attend, this would be the year to start! Join us on Friday, April 10, 2015, 7:00 pm, at Trinity UMC. If you would like to bring cookies to share during intermission, that would be great. A freewill offering will be taken with all proceeds going to UM4GI Emergency HIV AIDS Fund. Learn more about the Nebraska AIDS Project and how our emergency mission helps others right here in Central Nebraska. Music and Mission, Food and Fellowship–Great combinations!
  • Join us on Saturday, April 11th for the 5th Annual Race for GRACE to support the GRACE (Grand Island Area Cancer Endowment) Foundation! UM4GI volunteers will be lining a one mile section of the course and providing traffic controls for the runners. Please join us for a fun morning cheering on the runners and supporting a good cause.   • Sunday, April 12th is Confirmation Sunday at 9:30 am at First-Faith UMC. Please join us to welcome these 15 youth to the UM4GI parish! The confirmands will be introduced at Trinity UMC on April 19th during the 11 am service also. See you there!
  • Sunday, April 12th at the 9:30 am service, will be Rhonda Heffelfinger’s last day directing the Trinity Bell Choir. Please join us at Trinity UMC for great Bell Choir music and stay after for a reception with cake thanking her for her years of great directing!
  • Moonshell Arts and Humanities Council of Grand Island has chosen to recognize UM4GI for offering U2charist to the community.  The award will be given at the “Celebrate the Arts” Awards Banquet on Sunday, April 12, 2015.  Pastor Matt Fowler will be present to accept the award.  The performing arts are a powerful way to connect with people.  U2charist has been a blessing to UM4GI and those who have experienced God’s love through this Maundy Thursday service. If you would like to attend the banquet to help celebrate this recognition, and support the arts and humanities in Grand Island, the banquet is at Riverside Golf Club with a social time at 6:00 pm and dinner at 6:30 pm.  The cost is $35 per person.  R.S.V.P. and send check by April 7 to: Moonshell Arts and Humanities Council, P.O.   • NEW! Group Study starting on April 12th from 6:30 – 8:00 pm at the Beckman’s home at 2816 S. Blaine Street. It will be facilitated by Melissa Winter and is open to everyone. Come join us!
  • NEW! Book Study Starting on April 14th from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. in Trinity‘s Youth Room with Pastor Karla. It is a 6 week study on the book “The Me I Want To Be” by John Ortberg. Discover the great task – and joy – of becoming God’s best version of yourself! Contact Pastor Karla at 382-1952 if you have any questions.
  • Save the date for the Trinity UMW Spring Rummage Sale at Trinity UMC! Donations will be accepted April 13th – 15th from 8am—5pm. Please use the NE doors to Miller Hall. The sale will begin on April 16th from 4pm-7:30 pm, April 17th 9am – 6pm, and April 18th from 8am – 2pm. On April 18th, the 1/2 price bag sale will be back! Mark your calendars to grab some bargains – and thank you for your support of Trinity’s United Methodist Women!
  • UM4GI’s Prayers Shawl ministry continues. If you would like to learn how to make a prayer shawl or make them with others, come to Trinity UMC Gathering Place on Thursday Nights at 6:30 pm. Contact Linda Harris at 227-1286 for more information.
  • Register to participate in First-Faith UMC‘s Dinner for Fun events to be held throughout 2015. Dinner for Fun 2015 is coming! Dinner 4 Fun is people sharing a meal, making new friends, renewing old friendships, and getting to know one another. It is for singles, couples and families. Do you like to cook? OK! If you don’t like to cook, deli food or take-out works also! If you can’t host or be a leader, there are other ways to share in the fun. The hope is that each group will meet together 4 times. Each group will have a leader to organize the group and keep it going, you meet when it works for your group. Your group can plan an after meal activity, such as games, visiting, watching sports, or playing cards, it is up to your group to decide. Upcoming Events/Announcements and Other Opportunities

  • ESL Classes Need Volunteers! The ESL classes that meet Mondays at 7:00 p.m. in Trinity‘s Gathering Place is looking for volunteers. You do not speak to speak Spanish to help out, and there are a variety of needs to be filled. Please contact Priscilla Hormachea at 850-5786 or Sarah Fowler if you are interested in helping.
  • Mission Trip – Spring 2015 has been set! A mission trip to Colorado is planned for April 18th – 25th. We will be working in the area of the 2014 flood, Weld County/Greeley area, Larimer County/Fort Collins area, and Boulder County/Boulder area. There is still space available if you are interested in going. Cost will be $200 – $225 per person. Scholarships are available. Please contact Carla Maurer at or 308-383-2553.
  • Save the Date for Summer Camp at Fontanelle! Summer camp will be held June 22nd – 26th at Camp Fontanelle. Pastor Matt will dean F.R.O.G.G.E.D. camp for youth grades 9-12, and Lyz and Braden Garwood will dean F.R.O.G. camp for youth grades 5-8. The theme for this year is “Power Up!” Living in the Spirit is about learning how to live a life powered by the Holy Spirit. It is a fun way to learn how you can be a follower of Jesus Christ. Scholarships will be available based upon need. Talk to Pastor Matt if you have questions.
  • Publications is currently updating addresses for those who live in skilled care or a nursing home. If you or a loved one lives in skilled care or a nursing home, please notify either UM4GI office of any address updates or changes.
  • Trinity UMC is ordering name tags! The Evangelism Committee is encouraging everyone to order their own name tag. It will help everyone feel more comfortable calling our fellow attendees by name, and our ministers can get to know our names as well. This will especially be helpful as we get new pastors! Trinity would like each congregation member, children included, to have a name tag. Trinity will be providing them at no cost to you for the first one, you can choose magnetic or pin back and a place will be provided at the church to store your name tag if you wish. You can print off a form here or email your choice of magnetic back or pin back, and how you would like your name to read on your name tag to Make sure to include all family members!
  • Trinity UMW and First-Faith UMC are collecting “Box Tops for Education” and Campbell’s Labels. These labels are used to purchase educational items to support Epworth Village in York. These labels can be dropped off in the black box on the lower shelf of the UMW library corner in Trinity‘s parlor or in the green tote in Fellowship Hall at First-Faith UMC. If you are not sure which part of the label to save, drop off the entire label and it will be cut down appropriately. Thank You!
  • On the first Sunday of the month, it is “Food Pantry Sunday” at First-Faith UMC! Donations can be placed in the “Food Pantry Grocery Cart” in Fellowship Hall at any time. Thank you for your support of the Grand Island Food Pantry!

  • NEW! Small Group Starting. Every other Sunday, starting April 12th at the Beckman’s (2816 S. Blaine St) facilitated by Melissa Winter and open to everyone!
  • Women of Faith Study: “The Other 12 Disciples”, a study of 12 women in the Bible on Mondays at 5:30 pm at Sharon Sorensen’s House (1717 W. Charles) or call Sharon at 382-7543.
  • Step Group: Mondays at 7:00 pm at First-Faith UMC. This is a closed group; please contact Pastor Matt if you are interested in this type of group.
  • First-Faith Quilters and Sewers: Every 2nd and 4th Tuesday at First-Faith UMC at 9:00 am.
  • Lenten Study: Wednesdays at 9:30 am in Trinity’s Youth Room with Pastor Theresa.
  • Women’s Study: Wednesdays at 1:30 pm at First-Faith UMC‘s Fireside Room.
  • Strong Women: Wednesdays at 3:30 pm at First-Faith UMC.
  • Hand Bell Choir: Wednesdays at 6:00 pm in the Sanctuary at First-Faith UMC.
  • Mom’s Group: Wednesdays at 6:30 pm at Trinity UMC in the Parlor outside Gollaher Chapel.
  • Zone: This fellowship group for all UM4GI children, grades 1st-5th, meets on Wednesdays from 6:30-7:30 pm at Trinity UMC in Room 7 and 8.  The program includes large group time, dramas, praise and worship, and rotational activities such as snack and game stations each week.
  • Middle School Youth Group: Wednesdays at 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm in Trinity UMC‘s Youth Room led by Pastor Matt.
  • High School Group: Wednesdays at 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm in Trinity UMC’s Tower Room led by Brittany Hesman and Nicole Lucas.
  • ReCHARGE: Wednesday evenings in Trinity UMC‘s Conference Room at 6:30 pm. A group of young adults (18-40ish), meets for fellowship and discussion.
  • Chancel Choir at First-Faith UMC on Wednesdays at 7 pm at First-Faith UMC.
  • Chancel Choir at Trinity UMC on Wednesdays at 7 pm in the Choir Room (downstairs).
  • Handbell Choir at Trinity UMC on Wednesdays at 8 pm (downstairs next to the Choir Room).
  • Prayer Shawl Ministry at Trinity UMC on Thursdays at 6:30 pm in the Gathering Place. Led by Linda Harris.
  • Men’s Study on Fridays at 7:00 am at Tommy’s Restaurant.
