Open Hearts Reconciling Community has been an official “Reconciling Community” with Reconciling Ministries Network for six years. It was started by about 20 people who are Reconciling United Methodists within the United Methodist Church in central Nebraska. Open Hearts seeks to be a faith support group for persons of all sexual orientation and gener identities, including allies, friends, and family members of GLBTQ (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning) persons. We seek to create a safe place for supporting GLBTQ persons of faith and promote a fully inclusive United Methodist Church. Open Hearts works closely with Hastings PFLAG (Parents, Friends, and Family of Lesbians and Gays) to affirm the Gay-Straight Alliance at Hastings College and the Gay-Straight Student Alliance at Grand Island Senior High. Open Hearts Reconciling Community also promotes Horizons of Faith each spring at First UMC in Omaha and other events in Nebraska, as well as supports the new Central Nebraska Human Rights Campaign (CNHRC).
If you interested in joining this group, please come early to any one of the meetings to read and sign the support group guidelines. Open Hearts Reconciling Community meets every month or two throughout the year as well as working to promote various events with over 400 Reconciling United Methodists in Nebraska. You can check out the Reconciling Ministries Network website here. There is also a Nebraska Statewide Reconciling Network of Friends which can be found on Facebook or their blog. Local contacts include Maureen and Pastor Jay Vetter, Pastor Bob Rhodes, Del & Carolyn Roper, Cathy Denman, and Jack and Linda Sample with Trinity UMC; and Pastor Chad Boling and Glenda Vetter with First UMC.
