Advent is a little hard to celebrate in some ways precisely because we know Christmas is coming and because in most of our lives, Christmas celebrations creep in throughout the weeks before Christmas – parties, shopping, family get togethers.
All of these things are meaningful and we can certainly approach them as ways to celebrate the life- and world-changing presence of God celebrated at Christmas.
But before Christmas is finally here, a good way to remember well its importance is to read the lectionary passages from the Bible for this Sunday.
Advent, above all, is a season of hope, and these passages speak of things we hope for, and things we claim are fulfilled in Jesus’ birth and life.
Give them a read and then ask yourself, what events in our lives suggest that we’re still hoping, still waiting for God to finish what God has started?
