In the midst of changing our church membership and financial records over to a new church management software program our server quit working. We have been in survival mode in those areas for about six weeks now. It is amazing how quickly we become dependent upon technology. Forty years ago we didn’t even know what a personal computer was and now we can hardly run an office or even communicate without them. The same things that simplify our lives complicate them.
I think it is that way with our faith, too. God’s forgiving love is the simplest notion – but it also complicates our lives. I always think about that the week after Easter when I read John 20:19-22. Jesus appeared to his disciples on Easter night, blessed them and then said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive people’s sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” (John 20:21-23 TEV) That teaching complicates my life.
