Pastor Ponderings with Pastor Matt: Blessings of My Covenant Group Retreat

Throughout seminary, I met weekly in a Wesleyan covenant group with four others.  Since seminary, we have met weekly by phone and have gone on annual retreats–last month, in Durham, NC.  We participated in Duke Divinity School’s chapel services and met with a few professors to talk about theology, ministry, preaching, and United Methodist history.   These were refreshing and stimulating activities; yet, simply being together for three days was the best part of the retreat.  It reaffirmed to me the truth found in Proverbs 27:17: “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend” (NLT).  I am a better person, a better disciple of Jesus, and a better pastor because of my covenant group.  It also reaffirmed my conviction that gathering in groups of close friends for the purpose sharpening one another is one of the best ways for us to grow in our faith.  I encourage each person of UM4GI to ask him/herself, “How might forming a small group help me be a  better person of faith?”
