From Pastor Theresa: Big Hairy Audacious Education Caravan

Our lay members to Annual Conference, informed us of the resolution that passed to form the Great Plains Conference Public Education Partnership. This is based on United Methodists’ support of public schools historically, and belief that strong public schools are crucial to the health and vitality of our communities and churches; yet public educators often work with little community support. For a complete copy of the resolution see: http://www.greatplainsumc.org/files/website/news/education_resolution.pdf

To act on this resolution, the conference has scheduled Big Hairy Audacious Education Caravan events in Kansas and Nebraska. The key to this initiative is church involvement with the community leaders and its schools. The closest caravan will be at Kearney First UMC, Sept. 30, 4500 Linden Dr.  The next closest is at Lincoln Saint Paul UMC, Oct. 2, 1144 M St. The caravan events will start at 6:30 with time for gathering, looking at displays and interacting. The presentation at 7 p.m. will include a local education expert, Bishop Scott Jones, and members of congregations. Other activities will follow with pie and ice cream.

Members of Trinity and First-Faith are asked to bring a contingent from our UM4GI Parish and register our group attendance for planning purposes. We hope to have 6 to 10 people from Grand Island to the Kearney caravan event. Teachers, students, parents, and members of the church community, if you would like to caravan to the caravan, contact me at tmason@greatplainsumc.org or call me 382-1952, so we can add your names to the registration.
