“Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” James 4:8 (NIV)
Wishy-Washy is a term we may use more frequently than double-minded. It sounds nicer. The definition though is “feeble in character, lacking strength or boldness.” I really don’t want that definition to apply to me in my faith or any other way. Maybe you don’t want it to apply to your life either. So what is the solution? James shares with us that as we come near to God, we will have the assurance that God is with us. As we come near to God we will realize how wishy-washy we have been in our life of faith. We will be exposed. We may even feel unworthy. James tells us to wash our hands. This kind of washing is symbolic for our wanting to wash our lives with Christ’s cleansing spirit. Our hearts will feel the renewing power of God’s boldness and strength upon us.
Every moment is an opportunity to recommit ourselves to desiring God’s closeness more than anything. With that closeness our character changes from feebleness to one of passion and courage as we live out our love of Christ and others.
